Stunning Music, but the sound is soft July 10, 2012 By Clifford H C. (Thompson, MB) See All My Reviews "Stunning Music, but the sound is soft. There is some absolutely beautiful music included in this disk. It includes the gospel cantatas for Christmas and a German Te Deum. The scale is larger than the "Remy" recordings, but not as intimate or articulate. The venue adds a softness to the music which obscures some of the detail. That is why only 4 Stars. The recording has the feel of sitting in a large to medium church. This really does come down to personal preference though. I just prefer the more intimate settings. These are Beautiful, Jubilant Christmas cantatas that can't be knocked for their performance. The soloists, choir and instrumentalist all do an excellent job. The Aria "Gib dich hier Vernunft gefangen" for the alto is stunning. This is followed by an amazing solo for Bass "Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe" accompanied by Brass and Drums. The recitatives that Stolzel created for all his cantata's are remarkable. I would have to say that Stolzel produced the best recitative of all of the German Baroque composers.

The German Te Deum is my favourite part of this recording and is an excellent example of large scale choral writing, interjected with bright celebratory solo passages. Joy seems to flow from every note of the music. Stolzel shows that he is more than a minor composer through every note of music. This piece of music is thought to be Stolzel's "Job Application" for the Leipzig Cantor position. Stolzel came in second place after Telemann, but declined the job when he got his position in Gotha. This lead the way for Bach to take up the Cantor position. It is easy to see why this piece would be favoured in this way. It harkens back to Buxtehude and Kuhnau, with some modern twists. Always bubbling brightly with joy, power and majesty. "
