Notes and Editorial Reviews

Joseph Kalichstein, Jaime Laredo, and Sharon Robinson offer a decidedly more melancholy Tchaikovsky Trio than we hear in impassioned readings by the Ashkenazy Trio on Naxos and the Duval Trio on Centaur. This is mainly the case in the first movement, where the players emphasize the feeling of despair in the main theme and make the transition to the second subject more resigned than hopeful. The long Theme and Variations second movement finds the musicians inspired by the score's manifold opportunities for color and solo expression. Kalichstein sounds particularly enlivened as he pours out robust piano tone throughout his virtuoso performance. Laredo and Robinson supply their own fervent virtuosity as well, making this one of the better Read more renditions of Tchaikovsky's grand movement.

Arensky's less emotionally enthralling but no less melodically beguiling Trio also comes off well in the hands of Kalichstein, Laredo, and Robinson as they underline the motivic drama of the Schumann-esque first movement while delighting in the sharply dancing rhythms of the scherzo. The musicians' expressively restrained style easily suits Arensky's more classically conceived work, though their rendition of the Elegia's main theme is given its emotional due. The nicely balanced recording places the piano to the rear in the spacious acoustic, allowing all three instruments to be easily heard. A worthy addition to the Russian chamber music catalog.

2 Thrilling Trios! July 31, 2014 By bess holloway (Boulder, CO) See All My Reviews "The pairing on this disc is wonderful. While Tchaikovsky is a familiar name, this gorgeous piano trio will be new to many listeners, as it was to me. The work by Arensky is my introduction to his music. It's a first rate bargain at 78 minutes of superb musicianship." Report Abuse
