Notes and Editorial Reviews

BOCCHERINI String Quintets, op. 13 La Magnifica Communità BRILLIANT 93076 (2 CDs: 110:57)

I reviewed volumes 1 ( Fanfare 29:3) and 2 ( Fanfare 30:1) of this series and offered praise for qualities that other authentic performance ensembles of pre-19th century music sometimes lack: “sharp accenting, singing tone, cantabile phrasing, a broad range of dynamics . . . [and] Read more attentiveness to tempo markings and the score.” All of this holds true for volume 3 as well. It offers a fine series of performances by La Magnifica Communità, and the kind of authenticity that will broaden its base of support rather than furnish anecdotal evidence of in-grown musical cliques.

The material on this release was written in 1772/73 and first published in Paris in 1775. The assertion from the first volume’s liner notes that by 1771 Boccherini had accepted a standard Viennese four-movement structure for quintets (allegro-andante-minuet-presto finale) isn’t mentioned in the new notes by the same author, and that’s all to the good—because no such standard can be found in these works either. Three of these six quintets are in four movements, while the other three are in three movements. Two quintets begin with large-scale slow movements. Two of the three-movement quintets feature an opening Allegro that is as long or considerably longer than their remaining pair of movements combined, while in one of the four-movement quintets, it is the final Presto that is the lengthiest section.

That Presto is a curiously bifurcated animal, a two-part rondo whose side episodes are concerned with vestigial thematic development. Closer inspection reveals that everything in the movement is a fragmentary transformation of the opening theme. There are some other surprises among the six works. My favorites include the Largo from the Quintet in F Major, a dramatic opera scena whose noble main theme is stated by the cellos; the strict three-part fugue that concludes the Quintet in D Minor, the composer’s style subdued if not banished in a display of his learned credentials; and the Andantino that leads off the Quintet in A Major, as sweetly majestic a movement as any Mozart ever wrote, with Boccherini’s own rhythmically flowing touch.

The engineering achieves just the right balance of resonant warmth and ensemble intimacy. Chalk up another success for La Magnifica Communitภand for Boccherini too.
