Notes and Editorial Reviews
Yes, here is yet another version of this work to join the throng already in the CD catalogue. It is an impressive reading. The late Roger Fiske much enjoyed it when it last appeared on LP, appreciating — as I do — the way Böhm sustains the very slow speed of the opening movement, calling it "mesmeric," and the sternness of the succeeding fugue, and altogether liking the secure authority of the whole reading. Böhm is also in fact extremely deliberate in the "Rex tremendae"; indeed, the performance conveys as well as any awe before the Almighty — listen to the weighty Sanctus — and the sense of severity that rightly should pervade the work while at the same time encompassing the extreme sorrow of the Lacrimosa,
(strings excellent there).
