| Girolamo Frescobaldi is now considered, "with Sweelinck, the most influential keyboard composer" of his day. A renowned virtuoso of the organ, he had left his native Ferrara for Rome by 1604, and within a few years his first published works were issued, he was elected organist of St. Peter's, and his fame began to spread rapidly. He remained in Rome for most of his life, except for a brief period of employment at the Medici court in Florence, from 1628 to 1634. In addition to the earnings from his organ performances in St. Peter's and other churches, he achieved the patronage of a number of wealthy and powerful cardinals and performed on the harpsichord in their apartments. Although he also wrote vocal works, both sacred and secular, as well as works for instrumental ensemble, it is for the extraordinary keyboard compositions that he is mainly known. These were revered as models for more than a century after his death, both within Italy and beyond. His pupil Johann Froberger, carrying forth his legacy, became the greatest German keyboard composer of the mid-seventeenth century. This recording presents eight of the toccatas, four each from collections printed in his "first maturity" (1615) and "full maturity" (1624). Dr. Anthony Newcomb points out that the toccatas received "the place of honor" at the head of these publications and "are Frescobaldi's most personal creations; they are among the finest products of the intensity of feeling and freedom of fantasy that were the glories of the early Baroque era in Rome." Louis Bagger also performs five of the large-scale, four voiced imitative works (capricci and canzoni), five dance-based pieces, and a keyboard elaboration of a famous madrigal. | |||||
