Notes and Editorial Reviews

Andras Schiff was the third young Hungarian to be involved in a complete recording of Mozart's piano sonatas issued in 1981 (the other two were Dezso Ranki and Zoltan Kocsis, who shared the complete series on two Hungaroton albums, SLPX11835-7, 5/81 and SLPX12219, 7/81). As I said at the time, I rather preferred the more direct, forthright playing of his two compatriots, even if Kocsis played some of the finales too fast, but there is much to admire in Schiff's nimble and sensitive performances despite his tendency to linger over a phrase, to indulge in momentary pauses and rallentandos in the slow movements (the Andante cantabile of K333 is a case in point).

Read more say that I feel less critical of small points and more convinced by its obvious sincerity. One of the best things in the original six-record set was Schiff's appropriately rhapsodic and dramatic reading of the great Fantasia in C minor, K475, prefacing the Sonata in the same key, K457, and this singledisc reissue is worth having for this performance alone. With the addition of K333 with its concerto-like concluding Rondo, and of the deliberately small-scale K545 in C (a sonata which everybody knows but which is too easily dismissed as a beginner's trifle), and a full and rounded recording from Decca, this becomes quite an alluring reissue.
