Notes and Editorial Reviews

This CD has been compiled from two separate LPs of shorter works that Bernstein recorded some four years ago. At just under an hour it makes a generous still if some of the other pieces had been added. Early Bernstein is well represented in the colourful and vigorous dances from On the Town, one of the most memorable of all musical films, while the three other works show the later Bernstein sharply sparked off by specific commissions. The Divertimento in its eight brief movements was intended as a tribute to the Boston Symphony Orchestra on its centenary, easily and cheekily moving from one idiom to another. It is often joky but amiably so. The two concertante pieces, Halil for flute and strings and the Meditations for cello and orchestra, Read more both beautifully reflect the individual poetry of the two artists who here perform them and for whom they were written. I had forgotten how well the fragments from Mass work as a separate piece, when delivered with the magnetism of Rostropovich.

When I reviewed the original LPs I noted the aggressiveness of this early effort in digital recording (''practically saws your ears off'' I said of Divertimento) and CD does nothing to minimize that, rather the opposite when with extra clarity one is more aware than before of the relative lightness of the middle register in relation to the biting brilliance of the top and the spectacular fullness of the bass. The fullness and warmth of the analogue recording of Songfest, now also issued on CD, shows up the discrepancy; but with Bernstein aggressive sound does little harm.'
