A great intro to Mozart January 2, 2015 By David H. (Chattanooga, TN) See All My Reviews "My 16 year-old daughter asked for my recommendations for a Mozart recording she could give her boyfriend, a growing devotee of "classical" music, for Christmas. I could think of no better place to start than with these recordings of the last five of Mozart's symphonic output with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. They give us clear, transparent renderings that are warm and expressive without giving in to exaggeration. Over the 50+ years of my music career as performer and teacher, I have reserved my harshest criticism for those performers who leave the music covered with their own "interpretative" fingerprints thereby obscuring the composer's intensions. When Marriner was approached to record the music for "Amadeus", he insisted that all music was to be done exactly as Mozart composed. Bravo! Sir Neville. He and his colleagues succeed carried the day then as they do here in this regard. They serve well as Mozart's advocates, giving us proportioned and cohesive performances that remind us again of how blessed we are that such a gift was visited upon humankind even if but for thirty five years."
