Notes and Editorial Reviews

Garrick Ohlsson; Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra/Jerzy Maksymiuk. EMI Laser CDZ 62512 (recorded 1975).

Garrick Ohlsson is a formidable interpreter of Chopin, and his accounts of the concertos with Jerzy Maksymiuk and the Orchestra of the Polish National Radio – the finest of Poland’s ensembles at the time the recordings were made – remain among the best in the catalog. Where other performers tend to emphasize either the passion or the poetry of the music, Ohlsson combines the two in a fiery blend. Maksymiuk draws lovely playing from the orchestra, the strings in particular. The
Read more recording is slightly dry and offers a studio-ish perspective, but while somewhat lacking in depth it is well balanced and tonally appealing. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection. Read less
