This is a reissue of a reissue. Several original EMI Classics releases were raided for a “double fforte” two-CD reissue a decade ago. Now most “double fforte” releases are getting a makeover, if you will—the new covers are much nicer—and are being reissued even more inexpensively in EMI’s “Gemini” series. In other words, this is your third chance to get these recordings. There’s no guarantee that you will get a fourth.

This is very upbeat music; yet I couldn’t help feeling a little sad as I heard it again. John McGlinn, who was one of the very best friends that vintage American musical theater had in the 1980s and early 1990s, seems not to have released any CDs for EMI Classics in more than 10 years. (In fact, the most recent outings I am aware of are two Wagner (!) CDs for Naxos.) Many scores by the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and others remain unrestored and unrecorded, and it seems increasingly unlikely now that we will hear anyone treat this music with the love and the seriousness bestowed on it by McGlinn on his discs for New World and EMI, or by various musicians in Nonesuch’s incomplete Gershwin series. Although Broadway still is doing well, it seems as if the desire to hear (or to perform) classic songs such as “I Got Rhythm,” “So in Love,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” and others in their proper context, with the right orchestrations, and sung more or less as the composers intended them to be sung, has faded. What a shame.

McGlinn’s performances blend authenticity—original orchestrations have been used whenever possible—and technical assurance with almost unbridled enthusiasm and affection for this music. He is like an explorer excitedly displaying his newly unearthed treasures. And treasures they are; you’ll lose count of the many great songs that are quoted in these overtures. Having said that, overtures to musicals do not necessarily make a healthy meal. Rossini, for example, probably would have been amused or confused by the idea of our listening to several of his overtures in a row, and the overtures on this CD—meaning no offense—don’t rise to the level of Rossini, in terms of musical value. Essentially, they are potpourris, because that was what was expected during the heyday of American musical theater. These tunes need words. Although I would never dissuade anyone from purchasing this wonderfully entertaining pair of discs, I would recommend that those who have read this far seek out McGlinn’s complete recordings of shows like Jerome Kern’s Sitting Pretty or Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate . They paint a more accurate and complete picture of what McGlinn was up to 15–20 years ago. Plus, that way you can hear the words too!

The engineering was spectacular then and remains so now. Most of the booklet notes are by McGlinn himself, edited from his notes to the original releases.
