Remember Barbirolli! March 25, 2014 By Philip Lee (Toronto, ON) See All My Reviews "Barbirolli excelled at making the string sections of his orchestras glow. We know that he adored Elgar and Vaughan Williams and that he came late to Bruckner and Mahler. But he applies the same principles of warmth and clarity to the more taut symphonic structures of these Viennese composers and, even to the sprawling mass that is "Heldenleben". I am less convinced by this recording of the Strauss than others, although it is fine in its way. There is something held back. But the Mahler symphony is superb and, to my ears, superior to Barbirolli's recording with the Berlin Philharmonic. The style is idiomatic - echt Mahler - and the musical logic peerless. There are many fine Mahler conductors. Barbirolli surely ranks among them." Report Abuse
