Notes and Editorial Reviews

This box includes the 11 recital albums that Maria Callas recorded in the studio for EMI between 1954 and 1969, starting with ‘Puccini Arias’ and ‘Lyric and Coloratura Arias’, taking in the highly successful recitals of French arias entitled ‘Callas à Paris Vols I & II’ and ending with the third volume of Verdi Arias that remained incomplete at the time of Callas’s death and which was issued in 1997 in a programme as close as possible to the one she was working towards. Also in the set are two CDs of EMI Rarities including the 1953 test of ‘Non mi dir’ from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, the 1961 Act 1 aria from Bellini’s Il pirata, the 1964 Nile Duet from Verdi’s Aida with Franco Corelli, and a number of alternative versions of arias by Rossini, Read more Donizetti, Weber and Verdi, different from those originally published during Callas’s lifetime. Also, there is the 1960 version of ‘ah parli a un core’ from Verdi’s I vespri siciliani and, for the first time on CD, the mono version of the Sleepwalking Scene from Verdi’s Macbeth, in which the final section uses a different ‘take’ from the stereo one.
