Notes and Editorial Reviews

This 1982 Gottschalk recital originally was issued on LP by the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings, and hopefully it will reach a wider audience via Bridge's CD edition. It features a well-restored 1865 Chickering Concert Grand that is similar in design to the instruments that the Chickering Company provided for Gottschalk's 1861-68 United States and Latin America tours. The instrument's light action, small dampers, slightly brittle treble, and thundering bass enhance this virtuosic repertoire with biting intensity and unexpected colors that have little to do with modern pianos. Listen to the twang of Deuxième Banjo's rapid chordal strums, or to the Union Paraphrase's eerily realistic muffled drumbeat imitations, and you'll get Read more what I mean.

Although the combination of distant microphone placement and resonant venue cast a hazy sonic impression, you readily infer the instrument's huge dynamic range along with Lambert Orkis' willingness to go the full decibel distance, so to speak. He must have had fun flailing away at Union's booming, karate-chop octaves that lead into Gottschalk's cleverly reharmonized Star Spangled Banner. That's as it should be, and the same goes for the pianist's idiomatic, big-hearted rhythmic élan in Souvenir de la Havane, La Savane, and Manchega. Deuxième Banjo is a longer, less compact rewrite of the composer's more familiar "first" Banjo, and Orkis' swinging yet flexible performance couldn't be a better opening selection.

Bridge's booklet contains excellent notes on the music and the instrument in addition to an interesting essay by Orkis concerning the project's process and outcome. All told, this is a valuable release that should attract period-instrument mavens and Gottschalk acolytes.
