Notes and Editorial Reviews

'Trouble in Tahiti' is a brief 'opera' of 40 minutes who Bernstein wrote text and music. The work can be considered the sad, banal reverse side of the enchanted dreams of Broadway and Hollywood. The cast is restricted to two characters and a vocal trio which comments on the action like a Greek chorus. The work is scored for a small orchestra; with striking flexibility, it provides both continuity and contrast between the elegant jazzy passages for the vocal trio and the arias or duets conveying the middle-class distress of the two protragonists.
