Music of BYRD, HUMFREY, GIBBONS

This boxed set of three slipcased discs is a reissue of discs devoted entirely to Byrd (11:1), Humfrey (16:5), and Gibbons (28:1). The box Read more neatly joins two 17th-century Anglican composers with the Catholic Byrd from the turn of the century. The first disc retains the misleading title of “masses” for the excerpts for Easter and Assumption from Byrd’s Gradualia (with several antiphons), and the San Franciscans are competing with some remarkably fine interpreters of these late Byrd works. McGegan still has the only collection of Pelham Humfrey ever made, so the competition is scarce and I greeted the original issue with gratitude. This is my first exposure to the Gibbons program, one that follows a number of notable issues of past eras. Ives chose the most frequently recorded anthems along with the four works of the Second Service, surpassing David Hill but not Jeremy Summerly, the contents of the three discs largely overlapping. The box includes a fine booklet that reproduces the contents of the original booklets. The price will make this box attractive to collectors who missed the original issues.
