Notes and Editorial Reviews

Shostakovitch's Violin Sonata (1968) and Viola Sonata (1915) are sombre compositions, the result of failing health and bitterness at the Soviet system. They are also very moving, and clear. The composer not only symthesizes two centuries of music, but he is also very forward looking: neither sonata conforms to a pre-established compositional system or to the constraints of set aesthetics. These are major works of the late twentieth century.
