"Put away yur Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov for a while and get ready for something new and altogether spectacular. This recording serves as a reminder of how great Russian symphonic works are supposed to sound. Vassily Kalinnikov's dramatic, bold, exuberant Second Symphony comes across as an absolute show-stopper in this fabulous performance by the Russian State Orchestra, led by Yevgeny Svetlanov. Poweful, impassioned, fiery... all are apt descriptions for this monumental recording, which brings out the composer's gift for orchestral power and melody, as well as Svetlanaov's legendary ability to motivate and drive an orchestra to its performance limits. The lighter side of Kalinnikov comes through loud and clear as well, with the sublime Intermezzo's # 1 and 2, plus the intensely melodic Serenade for Strings. Completing the disk in an excellent symphonic poem entitled 'The Nymphs'. I am convinced this disk will provide a superb listening experience to one and all. It will also suggest to us just what the Russian classical music tradition lost when Kalinnikov died at the age of only 35. Don't hesitate with this one- it's a winner in every respect! Highest recommendations."
