Wonderful Schubert performances  July 4, 2017 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "Herbert Blomstedt seems to have a special ability when it comes to fine interpretations of the Schubert symphonies. A number of his recorded performances have been available for a long time, all very good ones. To me this performance of the Eighth Symphony projects the tragic mood of the first movement perfectly, and the rest of the music on this disk is very fine also. The playing of the San Francisco Symphony is superb. Of course these are not period instruments performances, but they are as fine as any with modern orchestras, and they enjoy beautiful sound. Modern orchestras succeed with these works because they embody Schubert's art as his skill had evolved beyond the classic period to open up the romantic era." Report Abuse
