Casals' best Schubert Quintet February 25, 2012 By Laurence Levine (Tucson, AZ) See All My Reviews "This was the recording that made me understand what Schubert's String Quintet is all about. There are a number of good recordings. Heifetz takes a strict approach. Most are lyrical. Some dramatic or anguished. This performance weds lyricism to anguish and even desperation. The mood is maintained until the end. This is taken from a live performance in 1961. Casals is technically past his prime. It doesn't matter. What you have here is Schubert facing his death. No performers are the equals of these in this work. The Vegh Quartet is inspired by Casals and are even better than usual. The coupling is a magnificent performance of Beethoven's Cello Sonata #1. Wilhelm Kempff is the pianist. He does his usual magnificent job. Casals is - well Casals. In closing, if you want the most intense, anguished, desperate, heartbreaking performance of this work, this is it." Report Abuse
