This latest volume, No. 32, in the Suzuki series contains four cantatas from January and February 1725, Bach’s second annual cycle for Leipzig, his year of chorale cantatas. The first two, Nos. 123 and 124, were actually composed for consecutive days—Epiphany, which fell on a Saturday that year, and the first Sunday after Epiphany. Cantata 111 followed two weeks later, and No. 125 on February 2, for the Feast of the Purification of Mary. Each cantata begins with a choral setting of the first verse of the day’s hymn and ends with a four-part chorale. All have four intervening movements, recitatives and arias, using paraphrases of the hymn. As always, the uniformity of structure is no indication of the breadth of Bach’s imagination. The four opening choruses, all written over a span of four weeks, underscore the point. Cantata 123 ( Dearest Emanuel ) begins with a movement of pastoral tenderness, No. 124 ( I Will Not Leave My Jesus ) with a dance-like movement; No. 111 ( What God Wants, May It Always Happen ) with a vigorous bi-level movement in which the motet-like choral element is superimposed on a concerto-like orchestral component. BWV 125 ( In Peace and Joy I Shall Depart ) opens with a spirit of utmost serenity, one of Bach’s more memorable inspirations. In cantatas 111 and 125, one of the arias is, in fact, a duet. As is so often the case in Bach’s cantatas, the duets are among the most compelling numbers in their respective settings.

Suzuki’s performances match his accustomed standards, which is to say that they are thoughtfully conceived and exactingly executed. To the best of my knowledge, tenor Andreas Weller is new to the Suzuki team: he acquits himself faultlessly, as do his more familiar counterparts. BIS’s recording is, as always, clean and clear. For collectors of the series, this disc is self-recommending; for others, it will not disappoint.
