Glenn Gould is much more than one of the greatest pianists of all time, more than a legendary figure. He exists beyond this – a fictional character. To relate the story of Glenn Gould, the least conventional of all pianists, in conventional documentary form was unthinkable. I had to invent a new genre. By opting for a treatment of the subject that was partly fictional, yet founded on a synthesis of all the musical, literary, and philosophical material available on Gould, I was convinced I would be able to capture the reality of the genius who made such a mark on my existence and that of a host of listeners throughout the world. Therein, I hoped they would hear the echo of their own experience. Bruno Monsaingeon

"Other films have tried to capture the elusive essence of pianist Glenn Gould, who died in 1982 in his hometown of Toronto, but this one may come the closest...What emerges from this curious interweaving of media is an intimate musical portrait of Gould that allows us to get inside his mile-a-minute brain. It's like visual bio-polyphony...Ultimately, the best thing about this DVD is that it fires the desire to listen to Gould's performance of Bach's "Goldberg Variations." Instilling that desire, of course, is the very effect Gould was trying to engender with his playing during his illustrious and often misunderstood career." -- Edward Ortiz, Sacramento Bee, Sunday, September 24th, 2006
