Notes and Editorial Reviews

WARLOCK Capriol Suite. The Curlew. 1 6 English Tunes. Serenade for Strings. 6 Italian Dance Tunes Martyn Hill (ten); 1 Ross Pople, cond; London Festival O ARTE NOVA 378680 (57:46)

Arte Nova recorded the contents of this CD in 1996, and previously released it in 1998. It’s good to see it back in the catalog, again. While the Six English Tunes and Read more Six Italian Dance Tunes are minor Warlock, they haven’t been recorded elsewhere. I prefer the Nash Ensemble under Brabbins (Hyperion 66938) in the Capriol Suite —especially “Mattachins,” where they really kick up their heels; but Pople’s Serenade is more lovingly detailed, and Martyn Hill the most sensitive soloist among moderns I’ve heard in The Curlew . (His treatment of the words has the unmarred intimacy of a great interpreter of song.) The liner notes are both short and poor, without even a discussion of the two recorded world premieres already mentioned here. Nevertheless, with slightly dry but good sound, an excellent orchestra, and a budget price, Warlock enthusiasts will definitely want this one.
