Notes and Editorial Reviews

Dorati's compilation of themes from Der Rosenkavalier was made during the 1940s, and he has recorded it more than once before. Its target as Dorati himself makes clear in his sleeve-note, is the general music-loving public, and this is underlined on this new digital recording by the self-indulgence with which Dorati and the Detroit players round it off with the big waltz theme. The fantasy from Die Frau ohne Schatten, by contrast, is Strauss's own personal compilation, made at the end of his life, from an opera for which he had an especial affection—an affection shared, of course, by so many of his admirers. The themes may be less memorable than those in Der Rosenkavalier, and this fantasy may lack the overlying integration of structure of Read more the great tone poems. Yet its depth and obvious sincerity make it much the more satisfying of the two works here, and the textures and colours make a telling impact, right from the opening Kaikobad theme, through the sound contrasts of the magical transformation music and the marvellous trombone statement of Barak's ''Mir anvertraut'' (an effect with which, we are told, Strauss astonishingly expressed himself dissatisfied at the fantasy's London premiere) to the glorious emotional climax at the end of the opera. Whether as an aural experience in its own right or as an invitation to try the whole opera, this is compelling stuff!

Digital recording might have been made for music such as this, and the strong, vigorous and committed playing of the Detroit orchestra help to make this addition to Dorati's Strauss series a desirable addition also to any Straussian record collection.
