Notes and Editorial Reviews

Specially Priced 2 CD Set
Mozart's last three quartets are very difficult to perform well. Because they were composed for the cello-playing king of Prussia, they are seriously bottom-heavy. But because they were composed for the cello-playing king of Prussia, they also are less musically innovative and interesting than the six famous works dedicated to Haydn. In other words, there's a certain conflict between what they express and the means of expression, particularly if, like many quartets, you impose on the music an additional weightiness resulting from the biographical fact that these are Mozart's "last" quartets, and therefore inherently "profound." The big F major Quartet K. 590 can withstand this
Read more treatment better than the other two, but fortunately the question is academic because the Leipzig String Quartet plays all of this music with the requisite lightness of touch, and an enlivening sense of rhythm. For example, they manage somehow to get the finale "feel" of the last movement of the D major Quartet, even though the tempo is the same (Allegretto) as in the first movement. In all, this is a fine, beautifully recorded collection, my only reservation being that the second disc contains only one quartet, plus a collection of excerpts from this group's other recordings. Just make sure that you aren't charged for two discs at full price.
