Notes and Editorial Reviews

I had the great privilege of being present at a Carnegie Hall concert by these forces featuring the two works on this disc, along with the John Adams Piano Concerto. It was one of the most astounding experiences of my musical life. There's a wild lick for six trumpets in unison in the middle of Amériques that was played with simply jaw-dropping unanimity. A colleague of mine visiting from overseas was stunned by the quality of the playing, and when the piece was over Dohnanyi just stood there, equally amazed by what he and his forces had achieved.

Is this recording that good? Perhaps not quite--especially in this crazy, complex music it can't replicate the experience of actually being there, and the sonics could have a

As with the Varèse, Dohnanyi brings amazing clarity and virtuosity to his Ives Fourth, particularly the second and fourth movements. I can imagine some listeners wanting a greater sense of sheer wildness in the second movement's more insane outbursts, but give me playing of this quality anytime. Dohnanyi treats the music like the radical masterpiece that it is. In sum--a stunning disc, happily back "on demand" from Arkivmusic.com.
