Notes and Editorial Reviews

A curiously constituted disc this, good enough value in quantity as in quality yet not quite adding up. Presumably the dilemma was that here were some unpublished recordings made by the late Sir John Pritchard: a pity to waste them, but what to put with them? Then, happy thought, the two great ladies of the Schauspieldirektor having been associated previously in that they were both part of a boxed set of LPs, their contributions there might be used to eke out the vacant space here, and all would come well because the various disparate elements all have Mozart in common.

And up to a point it does work out well, in fact it's a feast of lovely things, and what old crosspatch is going to come to a feast and sit around grumbling?
Read more But of course, without dialogue Der Schauspieldirektor is itself only a sequence of concert items: any claim to dramatic interest is quite spurious because, although we dutifully refer back to the synopsis to see what story is developing, there is no possibility of becoming involved in it or of experiencing the music as anything other than five separate pieces with the thinnest of threads to connect them. Then, taking the disc as a whole, it is as though the concert of separate items continues (very enjoyably), and when you think it is all over there is still the Overture to Le nozze di Figaro to come.

The performances are splendid, with perhaps just one caveat: that is, that it is really one of the rules of the game that the contest of prima donnas in Der Schauspieldirektor should have no winner, whereas here I'm afraid Gruberova is definitely the loser. She sings as ever with crystal clarity and dazzling brilliance, but there is something not quite pleasing about it: a slight awkwardness up on high and, in the finale especially, an intermittently edgy, unsteady effect. Dame Kiri, by contrast, sings divinely, the tone exquisitely placed, the florid work highly accomplished. Happily, honours are even in the concert arias, recorded in 1980, Gruberova's tone here being much more sympathetic, especially in the carefree charm of Un moto di gioia. To Te Kanawa goes Bella mia fiamma, one of the masterpieces, and again beautifully performed. Excellent too is Manfred Jungwirth's Entfuhrung aria, one of the funniest versions and well worth salvaging in such a collection as this.
