...the unanimity and clarity of ensemble are worthy of Reiner himself, as is the theatrical presentation of character, though that character is often very different. Levine's treatment of the troubadour's song in ''The Old Castle'' is richly operatic, with a pronounced slide for the rising fifth when the divided first violins take over the song (from 1'04''). And slow phrases are always shaped with generosity: the first phrase in ''Cum Mortuis'' from oboes and cor anglais, a ghostly fragment of the ''Promenade'' theme, is both atmospheric and expressive. Then there is the bold colouring, not least in ''Baba Yaga's'' descent to Neidhohle (well, almost) with the fruitiest tuba and contrabassoon (track 14 from 2'01'').
