Notes and Editorial Reviews

Walter Kraft recorded Bach's voluminous works for the organ, on 20 historic instruments in Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark, most built during the composer's lifetime. This set was regarded as complete at the time although it leaves out all alternative version of the many chorale preludes. Released in a series of three-disc sets by VOX in one of the label's most ambitious undertakings, these recordings by a master player from the mid-century interpretive tradition made these pivotal works available to a wide audience at a bargain price. Now for the first time this complete set is available on CD in new digital re-masterings of the archival Vox tapes.

R E V I E W S

Newly minted from the original 1961-7 tapes, Walter Kraft's Complete Bach Organs Works comfortably fits on 12 CDs housed in a budget-priced, space-saving box. The repertoire contains all of the organ works with BWV numbers as of 1967, minus alternate versions. The twenty instruments heard throughout this set constitute a grand tour of Northern European baroque organs: some rebuilt, some reconstructed, and others more or less in their original state. One also can trace a historic lineage to Kraft: at the time of these recordings he was the organist at the Mareinkirche at Lübeck, a post occupied by Buxtehude.

Kraft takes full of advantage of the instruments at hand by virtue of his keen ear for effecting transparent and timbrally diverse registrations, especially in the more introspective chorale preludes. But the potential for full-throated expression in big works like the Preludes and Fugues, or dramatic tutti/solo differentiation as delineated in the Concertos after Vivaldi is thwarted by Kraft’s clench-fisted sobriety and frequently draggy tempos. That said, organ buffs will be delighted to know the vivid, clearly detailed engineering has dated very little, and sounds as good as it’s going to get. If you see a dog-eared copy of the Murray Hill box in the trash, it’s probably mine!
