Definitely a Masterpiece! September 16, 2012 By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA) See All My Reviews "This disc, purchased recently, will go directly to that small group of my favorite recordings. It is a masterpiece! To start with, it is composed of two of the finest piano concertos ever written. But more importantly, the two pieces are preformed by the most outstanding musicians available! Van Cliburn has long been in a class by himself, and he is accompanied by a conductor and orchestra that are absolutely second to none in recorded history. I have long been a fan of that genius, Fritz Reiner, and the orchestra that he transformed into one of the world's finest, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Van Cliburn brings all of his unique feeling and unmatched talent to the forefront on these two masterpieces, and Reiner and the CSO provide an accompaniment that is impossible to describe with just words. They speak up when the music calls for it and blend in perfectly otherwise. I also own Rudolf Serkin's recording of Beethoven's "Emperor" Comcerto with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and, although it is wonderful in every aspect, I must admit that I prefer this one. You could go all out and obtain both discs. You would never be sorry, but if you can own only one, buy this disc while the getting is good! Highly recommended." Report Abuse
