Notes and Editorial Reviews

This Scheherazade has long been one of the work’s reference recordings. I do wish we could hear the tam-tam in the finale climax, but that lacuna aside there’s nothing here to criticize: amazing playing, particularly from the woodwind soloists, and a conductor who perfectly balances lusciousness (first and third movements) with virtuosity and excitement (second and fourth). It’s just wonderful. The Borodin, though, taken from a live performance, is less memorable: quite good, but not really on the same level either interpretively or sonically. After the conductor’s death, Philips released a pile of live Kondrashin material, some of which was excellent, but most of which was pretty forgettable. This was hardly the worst of it, but neither Read more was it the best. Still, it makes a nice bonus to the Rimsky-Korsakov, which remains the star of the show.
