Notes and Editorial Reviews

Haitink’s first recording of Mahler’s Third is noteworthy less for his contribution than for the marvelous sound that the 1960s Concertgebouw makes in this music, a sound that has largely disappeared. The menacing timbre of the trombones in piano, the soft, bell-like timpani, the warm but rhythmically crisp strings, and those “woodsy” horns and unbeatable woodwinds (that at least they still have) make this performance utterly special, and of its type incomparable. Haitink, for his part, puts together an interpretation as cogent as any on disc, and he deserves credit for the unobtrusive pacing and translucent textures, and for the most gorgeous, organ-like final chord ever captured (he never was able to duplicate it). Maureen Forrester is a Read more perfect soloist in the fourth movement, and the performance of Das Klagende Lied is also one of the best available of the revised, two-movement version. A must for all Mahlerites.
