Notes and Editorial Reviews

"During their lifetimes, Richard Strauss and Karl Böhm were almost like father and son; the old and wise master with his curious and most intelligent acolyte. No wonder Böhm has left us an immense recording treasure of many known—but also many less-known—symphonic poems and operas by Strauss. Most prominent are of course his recordings made for the major record labels, but there exist other recordings, sometimes made under less than great conditions.

One such example is this recording, which dates from the Salzburg festival of 1974. This is certainly a very interesting document. The story of the opera is drenched in an atmosphere similar to Mozart’s Magic Flute—mysterious, and full of symbolic suggestion. The
Read more cast Karl Böhm assembled is one of the very best ever gathered for this opera. For several decades, Leonie Rysanek was the empress of all empresses. Her personality suits the dramatic intensity of the character very well; and her wit and the freshness of her voice made her ideal for the role. James King is an evenly matched emperor; he displays astonishing accuracy and technical brilliancy. Christa Ludwig, as the dyer’s wife, may be the greatest on disc.

This recording has great value because of the excellent cast. Full libretto and synopsis are included."
