Notes and Editorial Reviews

Salomé was recorded in 1988, Psaume 47 in 1989, and issued together in 1990 as Erato 45029. For this reissue, sound has been given a discreet boost, though it can’t bridge the panoramically recessed aural perspective of the original. If we had only these performances, we might consider ourselves well served, but a turn to Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony in Salomé, from 1958—currently available on Mercury 434 336—is revelatory. In the Prélude, Janowski’s Radio France forces deliver their lines with sinuous coolness and expert aplomb where Paray phrases them with the immediate lift of melodic import while presiding over an intimate colloquy redolent of summer nights and sensual warmth. Janowski offers us a Read more documentary, Paray presents the beating heart. The distant sound of Janowski’s capture allows detail to clot—the mêlée of Psaume 47’s opening, for instance, makes a mighty but indistinct noise in which the organ’s entrance is almost wholly covered. A 1973 go at this by Jean Martinon and the ORTF—reissued on CD in 1987 as EMI 749748 (no longer available but well worth tracking down)—shines forth in closely detailed éclat, with Gaston Litaize’s entrance making a crushingly dramatic impact. And so on. And that’s to say that Schmitt’s striving for colossal, Ninevite effects is undone by a, relatively speaking, distant recording.
