Only for commited and dedicated Horowitz fans.... October 12, 2012 By S. Martorella (East Greenwich, RI) See All My Reviews "This album is both disappointing and uniquely beautiful at the same time. For those who wish to hear a more brilliant and dynamic young Horowitz, this album will surely disappoint. For those who understand and appreciate the exquisite expression of the mature Horowitz, then this album will offer a perspective like no other. These recordings were made in the last years of his life, primarily in his home. They are not his best playing, and quite possibly were never intended for anyone else to hear. But here they are, and for those who truly love and appreciate Horowitz as one of the greatest piano legends of his age, then this album will offer a rare glimpse into the soul of this man at his own pace, performing the music he loves for himself, perhaps not perfectly, but with a beauty hard to match from any "performance" of these mainly smaller gems. While much of the literature is familiar there are a few pieces that are seldom heard. This music reflects his personal taste, and shows his private and sometimes most intimate expression. If one compares this to his other recordings, it might lack for accuracy, for dynamic impact, and even some of the poignancy of his last official album, which contains what I think is the most beautiful "Aeolian-Harp" etude of Chopin I have ever heard from anyone. But for those who are familiar with all or most of this great artist's recorded work, or who were so privileged to have heard him live, this album presents a final postscript to a wondrous artistry, and I am proud to have it on my shelf of favs." Report Abuse
