"I have too many wonderful memories of Elizabeths from the past. First, there was the the exquisite Elizabeth of Monserrat Caballe in the Carnegie Hall concert performance of, "Roberto Devereux," that introduced her to the American public and set the opera world on its ear; and then there were the Beverly Sills, brilliantly sung and perceptively acted performances with the New York City Opera company. I will not venture to make comparisons. Suffice it to say, this is an engrossing contemporary production that presents its artists to good effect and in a well crafted manner. Ms. Gruberova is vocally impressive and is altogether a commanding Elizabeth. Maestro Haider is new to me and I found him to be a warmly lyrical conductor fully in control of his orchestra. And need I mention, what a bargain!"
