The Basle Ballet dances Heinz Spoerli’s 1980 Pulcinella
* Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev with original sets by Pablo Picasso, Pulcinella is a Neapolitan comedy danced to music by Igor Stravinsky.
* Choreographer Heinz Spoerli presents his 1980 production with the Basle Ballet – a magical rendering that is
both faithful to his famous predecessors and delightfully modern.
* Pulcinella relates the story of a town rogue who plays an elaborate trick on three flirtatious girls and their boyfriends.
* The score for Pulcinella was one of Stravinsky’s first neoclassical compositions and incorporated musical material from chamber music by Pergolesi.
R E V I E W:
"Marriner conducts Stravinsky's Pulcinella in a recording made for television in 1983, staged by Heinz Soperli for the Basle Ballet, who developed Pulcinella as a comic ballet for his fine company, taking the original version of Diaghilev and Massine as a starting point, making some small changes in the characters and plot, which revolves about a rogue who plays tricks on amorous couples. The result is a superb balletic presentation of Stravinsky's score, which is based on early manuscripts by Pergolesi. The final scene is particularly effective, all in white and perfectly suited to Stravinsky's wonderful score. One never sees the orchestra, conductor or soloists; filming of the dancing is imaginative. Fine artificially induced 5.1 sound." -- classicalcdreview.com

Review of Pulcinella January 21, 2014
By Diane S. See All My Reviews
"This was a Christmas gift to a friend who loves Commedia del arte, ballet and Pulcinella is his favorite Stravinsky music. He left me a message the next day telling me how much he loved this performance. He had watched the entire ballet that afternoon and was planning to watch it again that night. He was in ecstasy over it and told me what a special and thoughtful gift it was. A superb and magical production incorporating his three great loves.. I was thrilled to be able to order this DVD from you. It brought my friend immeasurable joy ."
Pulcinella Ballet DVD Highly Reommended March 17, 2013

"I have always been fond of Stravinsky's Pulcinella and looked forward to seeing the actual ballet on this DVD. I was not only delighted with the choreography but with the recorded sound and high level of musicianship displayed by conductor Neville Mariner and the orchestra. Mariner's tempos for each movement are perfect. Every detail emerges with impresive clarity. Stravinsky's occasional subtle blending of his 1911 Petroushka style coupled with his intricate discrete handling of the Baroque idiom some eight years later in 1919 is absolutely masterful. This excellent performance by the dancers and musicians reaffirms ones admiration for Stravinsky as an innovative composer at one of the seminal points in his creative output."
