Just a year after their first program of Pierre de Manchicourt’s music (28:6), this outstanding parish choir in Boston has made “Volume II,” matching their devotion to his contemporary, Thomas Crecquillon (25:4, 26:5). All four discs have followed the same plan of a Mass filled up with half a dozen or so motets. Manchicourt has fared badly on records, for only Paul van Nevel has given us as much as a full disc (21:1) in addition to this same “Laudate Dominum” in a collection (19:4) since Émile Martin’s recordings of two Masses in the LP era. But even these five Masses are only a fraction of the 19 that
Read more survive. The composer took charge of the capilla flamenca in 1559 and brought it to Spain when Philip II moved his court there. Only the brevity of his five-year career can account for his subsequent neglect.

The motets are composed for Easter time, the Blessed Virgin, and St. John the Baptist, with the final work a textual expansion of Psalm 116 to glorify the risen Christ. All are celebratory in a way that contrasts with the appropriately somber approach to the funeral Mass. This splendid choir achieves one mood as perfectly as the other. Wood, the associate conductor, directs only three movements of the Requiem. The choir of 17 voices sings with a lightness that comes close to the sound of a smaller vocal ensemble so often heard in music of the period. The first master of Philip II’s capilla flamenca has never had it so good on records.
