Notes and Editorial Reviews

Vincenzo Bellini's 'Norma' is a paragon of bel canto opera, a beautiful, lyrical work that is a potential tour de force for the right soprano. The role of the betrayed Druid high priestess is notoriously demanding and challenging, requiring a singer with a dramatic voice, virtuosity, and the capability to express a wide range of emotions. Gina Cigna, in a 1937 recording with Vittorio Gui and the RAI Symphony Orchestra, offers a sinewy portrayal of the title character, and while her voice might not be characterized as beautiful in the traditional sense, her interpretation carries an emotional intensity and dramatic edge that is appropriate for the role. But the real treat here is Ebe Stignani's performance as Adalgisa. The role is important Read more to the success of the opera and the scenes with Norma are pivotal. Stignani matches Cigna's intensity in their duets and displays passion, strength, and vocal agility. She sings in a clear, powerful voice throughout, delivering a compelling portrayal of the "other woman." Both singers, along with Giovanni Brevario, Tancredi Pasero, Adriana Perris, and Emilio Renzi, are aided by Gui and the orchestra who demonstrate an idiomatic understanding of this masterwork.
