Notes and Editorial Reviews

This will be a brief review because, although I would recommend this collection to any lover of good singing, it is probably aimed at fans of this beloved artist. Many of them probably owned the LPs in question, as I did and still do. Most of the Zarzuela arias, with the possible exception of Pablo Luna’s De España vengo, (the audience probably requested it as an encore at most of her recitals) will only be known to specialists, but many of the songs are of such familiarity that some will be dismissed as “war-horses.” Nevertheless, given a mastersinger and tasteful accompaniments (I don’t know who did the arrangements), those old war-horses have plenty of life left in them. I’m sure you won’t have much trouble matching the composers Read more above to the more familiar ones: “On Wings of Song,” “I Love Thee,” “Cradle Song.” “Songs My Mother Taught Me,” “Plaisir d’amour,” “Les filles de Cadiz,”and “La paloma.” With the exception of the Dvo?ák song, which is performed in German, she does them in the original languages, whose texts are included along with English translations and appropriate annotations.

An Almost Lost Art September 8, 2012 By Dr. Helen Hatton (Hamilton, ON) See All My Reviews "It is a given that Victoria de los Angeles was one of the supremely great singers of the 20th Century. She had it all, an exquisite voice, technique, mastery of style, musicality, and she was a fine musician. So are many others. What about her was so special? She had that most elusive of attributes--charm. Charm is not easy to define. Beguiling? Warmth? Yes, but it is more. You might think you could live happily if you never had to hear that old chestnut, La Paloma again. Listen to de los Angeles sing it and you realize that you have never really heard the possibilities. Similarly, with the Bluebird (Azulao) or Renado Hahn's L'Enamouree.or above all, Plaisir d'amour. The competition simply fades into obscurity. This woman could charm the birds from the trees. How does she do it? Not by breaking the line with sobs or sighs. Not by sacrificing legato by focussing the voice in the mouth, so that she can add a colour to every word. She does it with the most delicate use of rubato and her grasp of what she doing as a whole, not a procession of notes.
This CD also brings us her irresistible singing of Spanish zarzuela arias. Irresistible is the word indeed, and if you have not heard her sing De Espana vengo, or Zapateado, or Carceleras, you have no idea of how delightful the genre can be.
What most people will not know is that she had something in common with the equally irreplaceable heroic soprano, Kirsten Flagstad. Your eyebrows will climb to the back of your necks when you read that, but it is true. Both sopranos never deviated for a moment from the Garcia method of singing on the breath. Manual Garcia and later his son Manual Jr. taught the greatest singers of the 19th Century, Malibran, Viardot-Garcia, Jenny Lind, Sir Charles Santley Both Flagstad and de los Angeles thus preserved their voices long past the age when sopranos retire--de los Angeles still sang beautifully in her 70s.
Herbert von Karajan's greatest accolade to musicians he respected was "s/he is full of music." He could have been speaking of Victoria de los Angeles."
