Notes and Editorial Reviews

Are there any bad recordings of the Concierto de Aranjuez? This certainly isn't one. Luis Orlandini plays very enthusiastically, with a focused tone and plenty of technique, and the orchestra accompanies expertly. Let's face it, no one needs another version of this chestnut, which isn't music of the depth that encourages seeking out multiple interpretations, but if the Rodrigo serves as a means for people to get to know Turina's orchestral masterpiece Canto a Sevilla, then the gambit will have paid off. This release fills a major gap--make that a positive abyss--in the romantic orchestral catalog.

The Turina is a big, colorful, lushly scored quasi-song cycle--"quasi" because there are orchestral as well as
Read more vocal movements. Think of it as a sort of Spanish Das Lied von der Erde. Why the music isn't better known remains a mystery. It's wholly gorgeous, and the only important previous recording was Victoria de los Angeles' mono version for EMI. Thank God, soprano Ana Rodrigo has a lovely voice and an equally intelligent way with the text (not included, annoyingly), while both orchestra and conductor respond with gusto to the colorful orchestration and superabundance of attractive, obviously Spanish tunes. Toss in the fine sonics, and trust me, this is a must.
