Notes and Editorial Reviews

Evelyn Lear and Thomas Stewart - a dynamic duo, as they described themselves, and one of the great musical couples - both celebrated their 80th birthdays in 2006. 5-CD box of rarities that cover all aspects of their careers with DG in the 1960s. Look out for Wolf Orchestral Songs, Nicolai's Te Deum, a beautiful CD of Romantic Duets by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, and Stephen Foster, plus rare lieder recitals of Strauss and Wolf by Evelyn Lear. CD booklet includes rare photos from the DG archives and from the artists themselves.

"A fine tribute to two significant American singers (who happened to be married), this attractive set gives a cross-section of careers that ranged from song recitals to Wagner

The Quick Tour August 21, 2012 By E. Barnes (Herndon, VA) See All My Reviews "Living in Washington, DC can have some peculiar advantages. One of them was having retired opera superstars Evelyn Lear and Thomas Stewart in our midst. They were active helping younger singers get a start. And Stewart even performed Titurel to Placido Domingo's Parsifal at the Kennedy Center (an unforgettable experience in so many ways). I already own a light smattering of Lear's and Stewart's recordings, but this "Musical Tribute" from DG was just what the doctor ordered. Three of the five discs are devoted to their intimate song artistry, a generous sampling to be sure, but you come away wanting more. Lots more. The remaining two discs celebrate their genius in opera and choral interpretations with a complete performance of Otto Nicolai's "Te Deum" and a wide-ranging selection of arias from operas. It's just the kind of mix I would have made had I been in DG's shoes (except I would have been tempted to make it ten discs). If you don't know much about these two great singers, you need to know more, and this compilation is a terrific discovery tour." Report Abuse
