There should always be at least a representative selection of Gottschalk available on record, and a glance at the current catalogue shows that Noel Lee's recital fills something of a gap. It does so quite creditably—Lee is well in command of all the virtuoso roulades and his sympathetic interpretations are decently recorded by Erato. But) have to say now that Ivan Davis's record has been reissued (Decca 414 438-ILE, reviewed on page 1465) it would be my definite first choice. Ten green bottles, entitled (punningly?) Union. It is for this kind of potboiler that Gottschalk is sometimes hailed as a precursor of Ives. More striking though are the anticipations of the Spanish piano idiom of Albeniz, Granados, Falla, and even Ravel, in the more familiar Banjo, Pasquinade and Souvenir de Porto-Rico.
The maudlin tear-jerker The dying poet, and the amiably vacuous Le bananier are a fair indication of the range of human experience encompassed here. Anyone unfamiliar with this attractive, unashamedly commercial music should find this record an enjoyable introduction.
