This set was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Choral Performance." Heinrich Schütz is regarded as the most significant German composer of the 17th century and the first from Germany to earn an international reputation. In 1615 Schütz' services as court composer, or Kapellmeister, were retained by Johann Georg I and within a few years the composer produced his first major collection of sacred music, the polychoral 'Psalms of David.' The work's grand scale, massive sonorities and remarkable variety of color are rooted in part in Schütz' counterpoint studies with Giovanni Gabrieli and the madrigal style most associated with the Italian composer. In addition, Schütz avoided the formal tendencies that often occur when writing for double and multiple choirs as well as exploring fresh compositional techniques (such as requiring the singers in the "Jauchzet dem Herren, alle Welt" movement to "imitate" the sounds of the instruments--harp, trumpet, cornet and others--mentioned in the text). So great was this work's reception in 1619 that it remained a powerful influence on other composers throughout the 17th century. As for modern listeners, this sumptuous and opulent new recording, performed by the Cantus Cölln vocal ensemble and the instrumental ensemble Concerto Palatino, has to be regarded as one of the best in the catalog. |
