Notes and Editorial Reviews

A renowned instrument and a fine player – an instant classic recording

At last! The magnificent Festival Hall organ was frequently recorded during the LP era but this is the first CD dedicated to this landmark instrument. It’s a timely release as the organ is in storage during the hall’s refurbishment: inevitably it will sound different after the hall is reopened with improved acoustics but Gillian Weir shows how musical and convincing the organ already is in a wide variety of repertoire. Even Dandrieu’s Noëls feel at home in the RFH – a tribute to the skill of organ-builders Harrisons and designer Ralph Downes. The much criticised dry acoustics actually prove to be an asset in clarifying the complexity of Reger’s
Read more emotionally charged Fantasia and Fugue. They also highlight the fact that Weir is the most rhythmic of organists and one can share her enjoyment of the Spanish dance elements in Bovet’s Preludes and the bell-like swing of Bach’s Prelude together with its majestic Fugue. Her performances of Ives’s witty variations, Grison’s dazzling Toccata and Dupré’s sparkling Noël Variations are characterised by imaginative colouring, wit and breathtaking virtuosity. The production by the late Denny Lyster is excellent although I would happily do without the added reverberation. A classic recording – a truly great CD!
