Notes and Editorial Reviews

Designating one track only for the entire Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini compels the listener to hear the work not as mere compositional ingenuity but as one grand narrative, something Rachmaninov himself suggested to the choreographer Mikhail Fokin (who created a 1939 ballet around this work). The partnership of Peter Rösel and Kurt Sanderling fulfills this expectation by giving the Rhapsody a sweeping arc and linear momentum that one infrequently hears in performances of the work. They bring this same collaborative sense to Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, which the table of contents on the back of the liner notes refers to as "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in C minor." This designation, too, betrays an approach to performing Read more the work that privileges the dialogue between the piano and orchestra over the virtuosity of the performer. This approach is in evidence throughout all three movements, but especially in the second movement, as in the passage where the soaring string melody is accompanied by passionately swaying piano chords. Like the Rhapsody, the Concerto sounds less like an amalgam of tunes and more like purposeful drama. Read less
