Regardless of what contemporary scholars may say, from both a violinistic and artistic perspective, Yehudi Menuhin's best work by far occurred as a child and adolescent, the period during which he toured the world as one of the great prodigies. These early years are his most interesting and are documented on this disc. It is during this period that his playing was most spontaneous and his musicality most unaffected. Employing an intense vibrato and breakneck tempi, his approach definitely has a gypsy element to it. This "gitano" aspect, combined with impeccable training lends itself particularly to the music of Sarasate, and the Caprice Basque and "Malagueña" are particularly noteworthy. perfectly executed. His playing of Kreisler is rather derivative, but this is understandable given the impressionability of youth. Nevertheless, Menuhin exerts a transformative influence on the listener; he grabs your ear. His old style playing is by far head and shoulders above that of present day prodigies.
