Notes and Editorial Reviews

Readers should be forewarned that when it comes to Christmas carols, my philosophical bent is pretty well characterized as much less is more. In my opinion, the best way to enjoy these simple musical delights is to sing them yourself. Next best would be to have them sung to you by carolers at your door. A close third would be listening to your church choir. Renditions by operatic divas (or divos) in arrangements that call for 300-voice choirs and 100-piece orchestras (augmented by large brass ensembles) are well down on the list, though probably ahead of versions by reigning pop or rock icons—but that’s a simple personal bias. As for recordings, I tend to prefer choruses to soloists, but I am not immune to the lure of novelty items. My Read more single favorite Christmas disc is a recording of Victorian music boxes.

So where in this hierarchy would I rank William Neil playing the organ of the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC? Actually, quite high. It doesn’t hurt that everything on the program is a legitimate church hymn. The arrangements are relatively straightforward, but with enough variety to sustain interest—and to show off the capabilities of his magnificent Aeolian-Skinner instrument. Neil’s playing is impeccable throughout, admirably restrained for the most part, but not without moments of grandeur. MSR’s recording is splendid. Warmly recommended. Let it snow!
