Notes and Editorial Reviews

The 8 CD MOZART set includes Symphonies Nos. 29, 33, 35, 38–41 from the Symphony Edition, plus the celebrated recordings of the Complete Violin Concertos with Giuliano Carmignola and the Wind Concertos with soloists drawn from the members of the Orchestra Mozart.

Review:

The membership of Orchestra Mozart reads like a Who’s Who of leading orchestral players, mainly from the crack European ensembles...It’s testimony to Claudio Abbado’s superb conducting – just as dedicated as if he’d been conducting the most profound Mahler or Bruckner symphony.

Abbado recording disappointment February 10, 2017 By Theodore Lewis (Germantown, MD) See All My Reviews "I had great expectations for Abbado' recordings of Mozart. O thought they would be well worth the substantial price. On playing them, however, I found the sound quality to be poor and the volume either too loud or too soft. Making Mozart sound banal might seem an impossible feat, but these recordings accomplish it." Report Abuse
Wonderful, autumnal, but fresh July 19, 2016 By Craig P. (New Rochelle, NY) See All My Reviews "The title of this review says it all: the playing is indeed wonderful, autumnal, but fresh in concept and performance. The orchestra responds well to Maestro Abbado: even though he was struggling through his last years with cancer, there is sadness. Perhaps a bit of wistfulness and a touch of regret -- but these are still vigorous, thoughtful and thoroughly rewarding performances, well-worth hearing over and over again. If anything, they remind me of Bruno Walter's thoroughly delightful late final symphonies of Mozart, performed with his Columbia Symphony Orchestra players on a many-times reissued SONY set of stereo performances from the period around 1960."
