Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ute Lemper's newest creation is a song cycle to the love poems of Pablo Neruda. This very delicate and beautiful songbook is presented mainly in Spanish but also has adaptations in French and English. It is a fantastic celebration of these especially sensual poems by the Chilean Nobel Prize winner and recognized master of the form.

R E V I E W S:

"Ute Lemper, the German-born chanteuse and longtime musical citizen of the world, opens her stunning new self-produced album Forever: The Love Poems of Pablo Neruda with a characteristically eclectic and international touch. A French-language version of the poem “La Noche en la Isla” (“Night on the Island,” “La nuit dans l’île” in French) is sprinkled with the
Read more sounds of Chilean musician Freddy Torrealba’s charango, a small South American guitar-like instrument, and swathed in gentle strains from the bandoneón, the concertina popular in Argentina and well-known to fans of Ástor Piazzolla’s art-tango compositions. Lemper sings the rest of the 12 songs, written and arranged by her and Marcelo Nisinman and arranged with help from her band, mostly in Spanish or English. But in any language, it’s her liquid-rainbow tones, her broad and worldly musical sensibility, and the endlessly imaginative reconfigurations of elements of jazz, South American folk sounds, and European art song that make this album so fascinating." -- Jon Sobel, BlogCritics Read less

Flop September 27, 2014 By Jose Mejia (Wellington, FL) See All My Reviews "Ms Lemper's rendition of Neruda is quite unexpected to say the least. Her music resembles more a mixture of her past cabaret recordings and Piazzola's tangos. They are far from the beautiful love poems we have read so often. The bandoneon overpowers the charango, probably the only connection to The Chilean poet and the rhythms portray anything but love, sensuality or romanticism. It's hard to listen to this record and imagine the they are inspired by love poems." Report Abuse
What a disappointment September 17, 2014 By Brian Leatherman (Centennial, CO) See All My Reviews "Seldom, if ever, have I been so disappointed by a recording! The songs have little or no melodic interest and are saved (which is too strong a term) only by the arrangements which are well and evocatively played. But it is, particularly, Lemper's wobble that ruins this CD. I finally gave up after 4 tracks. I will sell this on Amazon as soon as possible, before other people realize what a worthless effort this is. Please understand, I have listened to and enjoyed Lemper's efforts in the past. But, to this listener, she is no longer an attractive singer, and she is most definitely NOT a composer." Report Abuse
