Notes and Editorial Reviews

To mark Maria Joåo Pires’ 70th birthday in July 2014, Warner Classics has reissued the pianist’s entire output for the Erato label in a 17- CD boxed set, packaged and programmed in original LP and CD jacket facsimiles. Dating from 1972 through 1987, some of this material has either been unavailable or difficult to locate for years.

One of my British colleagues described Pires’ artistry as “unselfregarding”. I take this as a euphemism for “self-effacing”, which may explain the lack of outward panache in the Chopin concerto’s flashier passages or the composer’s less taxing Préludes (I prefer the pianist’s bolder DG remakes). However, there’s plenty of poetry and nuance in the 14 “standard” Chopin waltzes, which
Read more Pires programs according to Dinu Lipatti’s order, rather than in the standard numerical sequence Rubinstein favored.

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with six 1975 Beethoven sonata performances. Both the “Moonlight” and Op. 109 match Pires’ DG remakes for scrupulous observance of dynamics and phrasing yet are far more direct and invigorating. Even her fast tempos for Op. 110’s first two movements do not sacrifice felicities of detail. And for those who doubt Pires’ sheer virtuosic aplomb, check out the Beethoven Appassionata and Tempest sonata outer movements.

The intimate scale and poetic insights that Pires brings to Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Waldszenen, and selections from Bunte Blätter often evoke Clara Haskil’s recordings of these same works. Pires always has inhabited and internalized Schubert’s sound world to the manner born, and she’s one of the few pianists who can truly keep your attention over the course of a leisurely-paced G major Sonata D. 894 first movement, with long exposition repeat intact. Pires plays four of the eight Impromptus beautifully, but not as well as well as she did in her DG remakes, although her recent DG revisiting of the posthumous B-flat Sonata D. 960 offered improvement in the first and third movements only. A high level of ensemble calibration distinguishes the Schubert duets with Hüseyin Sermet; listen to how they render the F minor Fantasy’s contrapuntal thickets with effortless transparency.

One suspects that Mozart is the preferred specialty of Pires’ musical house. She set down 11 of his concertos for Erato, including two K. 595 recordings, of which I choose Armin Jordan/Lausanne Chamber Orchestra for its more refined pianism, less shrill sound quality, and superior orchestral support. However, Pires’ DG remakes of this work along with Nos. 17, 21, and 26 (all conducted by Abbado) are sonically and musically preferable. Her 1985 Erato C minor Fantasia K. 475 and Sonata K. 457 strike a pleasing balance between her 1974 Denon version’s gentler contours and her DG remake’s bolder subjectivity.

In Bach’s D minor, A minor, and F minor keyboard concertos Pires is not just a soloist but also a thoroughly interactive chamber participant, tellingly adjusting her tone and her balances to the contrapuntal environment. The booklet notes are slightly allusive and melodramatic, yet they contain pertinent information about Pires’ long and fruitful relationship with the label that helped establish her international reputation.
